Lindsay France | New York | New Day!!

My name is Lindsay France, and I started my baking venture about 3 years ago when I started living in NYC. When I graduated from college, I moved to NYC to pursue my passion for fashion. However, I soon realized I had an equal passion for baking. I began baking for coworkers and other small events, and started to receive amazing feedback! What once started as a hobby, quickly turned into orders and companies reaching out for collaborations. I really owe the initial spark to seriously pursue my small business is from co-workers and friends/family pushing me to seize the moment. It's easy to talk about your business figuratively as a "maybe one day" scenario, but what better day than today?

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?

Well speaking from experience, there will always be hurdles to overcome, but that is one of the most exciting parts about starting a business. When you have a small business, it is so easy to become your own worst enemy. Since you are the one putting blood, sweat, and tears into your products, it is easy to fall into the trap of self-doubt and fear when failures arise. However, the biggest advice that I can give is to keep the blinders on and not compare yourself to other accounts or companies. Each business has their own path, and when you are doing what you love it will come through in your work!

What books are you currently reading? And your recommendation for entrepreneurs to read?

I highly recommend reading success-based books if you have the time, but TED talks are also a quick way to get a fresh mindset or new perspective. I like the book "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Influencer" podcast

Did you ever deal with contention from your family and friends concerning your entrepreneurial pursuits? How did you handle it? What would you do differently in hindsight?

I think it is always nerve-wracking at first to share the idea with friends and family because you don't know what their feedback will be, but luckily I had a great support system that really pushed me to pursue my dreams. Most entrepreneurs, like myself, do have full-time jobs outside of their small business which can put strains on free time that would normally have been spent with friends and family. There are a lot of sacrifices that you will have to make, but I think if you have discussions with your loved ones up front, it is easier to bring them along for the journey.

What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business success?

I would easily say commitment! Small business is no joke! Those entrepreneurs who became successful are not lying when they say it takes all of your waking moments and no days off. I think it is beneficial to figure out ways to prioritize your time so you are effectively working and not wasting energy

What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur?

Learn how to effectively manage money and know your worth! Some places it is better to buy in bulk while other times it is better to buy in small increments. Sometimes it is better to cut a deal while other times it is better to charge full price. It is a constant balancing act, and it's better to know at the beginning your limits and pricing.

What advice would you give to an upcoming entrepreneur locally and internationally?

If it is something you really love and passion about, don't give up! There will be fear and failures, but you never know what the next day will bring. Each day is a new day to create something new that can benefit someone's life (even for a moment) and to me that is liberating!
