Beverly Afaglo Baah | Ghana | Self Belief!!

My name is Beverly Afaglo Baah, an actress and entrepreneur from the Volta Region in Ghana. Before my acting journey began, I was a presenter on TV3 and later hosted Beauty & Style on Metro TV. I am also a trained Beauty Therapist – a graduate of FC Institute of Beauty Therapy, Ghana and a former student of Ghana Institute of Journalism where I studied journalism and public relations. Let’s face it, sometimes we all dream of leaving our cubicle and instead spend our days on a beach somewhere. My entrepreneur journey began when I was so broke (financial hardship) during my early years as an actress and needed money to pay my bills etc. My initial endeavour was designing tank tops (It was successful in the first quarter, however later the market became saturated that I hardly made sale afterwards. So I shifted my focus re: opening a merchandise store or outlet). Geared for auctioning or selling celebrity red carpet clothes since I knew more about the industry. In fact, that didn’t go well as planned! All I wanted was to live comfortably my way, so I decided to think outside the box knowing my commitment as a wife and a mother supporting, caring for my family! That was how "B.A.B Handyman Ghana Ltd" was born. Creating a platform and opportunity for local artisans or local handymen as well as be a service provider to many. Moving forward, I went ahead and employed plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners etc., knowing well the opportunity in this space. So far we have had great remarks about the concept. We are growing exponentially and I am grateful for the support, the patronage and the journey!!

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?

My initial hurdle was: my team re: I had unreliable employees who weren’t ready to work by sacrificing their time. Therefore, I had to fold up my sleeves and restructure my team’s framework – taking few calls and supervising majority of onsite jobs myself we were called to do. As an actress, I had to reject few scripts along the way to focus on my Startup. I couldn’t handle all the pressure – juggling being a mom, a wife etc. However, I was determined on making it work so I got through the difficult part with a new core and reliable team. Momentarily, we have 36 experienced employees and we are on track covering majority geographical market in the country – whenever or wherever we are called within a 24 hrs timeline! Our clients or potential clients are excited to have most of their familiar handyman just a phone call away.

Did you ever deal with contention from your family and friends concerning your entrepreneurial pursuits?

How did you handle it? What would you do differently in hindsight?

Even though I am still an actress and a mom, my immediate family has been supportive through this process and the sacrifice this brings. I try my best to juggle both my Startup and acting career – but 80% of my concentration goes into my new business because it’s a growing company and has a huge potential and longevity.

What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business success?

Teamwork and communication in this industry or space is key factor. Because without those elements I know we won’t be doing a great job.

What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur?

That SM can be huge plus starting your business no matter the space. Its has been very helpful in getting the word out so fast – meaning being popular so fast. I am very much involved in the company, handling our social media platforms and emails too.

What advice would you give to an upcoming entrepreneur locally and internationally?

Anyone can create their own business success story from scratch, yet we all have one thing in common: determination. Regardless of our education level, resources available to us all so make good use of it. We can create our own opportunities through hard work and self-belief.

Determination!!
