Lee Holmes | Sydney | Connecting Health & Passion

Tell us about your journey!

After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and fibromyalgia several years ago, I was on a cocktail of foreign antibiotics and medicines. I became accustomed to feeling lethargic, depressed and in constant pain. Whilst I knew that all of the medication I was prescribed to was going to help alleviate my symptoms, I knew there was something bigger I had to fix; an underlying issue that I had to figure out. After doing lots and lots of research into health and wellness, I decided to implement different ideas into my own life and from this, started to feel a little bit happier and healthier. This sparked my interest with all things wellbeing and health, in particular, gut health. This is when I started my blog, www.superchargedfood.com which has given me the avenue to share recipes, connect with others and write down my ideas. The rest is history!

What made you take the leap into entrepreneurship?

Like many others, my interest in health and wellness was inspired by my own illness. I supercharged my life because I had to; I didn’t have any other choice. I could see how health and wellness could improve my life and I just wanted to help others do the same.

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?

When I started writing, blogging wasn’t as well known or commonplace as it is now. I was surprised people wanted to even read what I was writing down! I wasn’t sure whether or not I could do what I wanted to do. Just like anyone, I was always a little afraid of people judging and questioning my actions. But, I just knew I had to follow my passions and do what I had to do! Something, I guess you can call it a gut feeling, was calling me towards the career, and I just had to listen to my gut.

Did you ever deal with contention from your family and friends concerning your entrepreneurial pursuits? How did you handle it? What would you do differently in hindsight?

Most definitely! I had to deal with a lot of judgement from some of my friends and family. I thought about it a lot and realised that my goals and passions were bigger than their judgement. I knew that deep down they would support me and be by my side once I had given them more insight into what wanted to do.

What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business success?

My own health journey and experience has made me learn so much about health. It’s been by far, the most influential factor in my business success.

What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur?

Not everything you do is going to be a huge success and that’s okay! It’s important to not be too hard on yourself! Remember to laugh and smile; life’s too short.

What advice would you give to an upcoming young and old entrepreneur locally and internationally?

If you have enough passion in what you’re doing, you’ll succeed. It can be hard to keep fighting your fight but if it’s something you love, it’s so worth it. Trust me, there’s no greater feeling than seeing your hours of hard work and dedication turn into a book on your bookshelf or turn around someone’s health for the better.
