Founder | Lead Career Strategist
My name is Lissa Appiah. I was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. My family is originally from Ghana. I am a Certified Career & Resume Strategist and the Founder of WeApply Canada Inc. I have a Master’s in Public Administration from Carleton University and a Bachelor’s in Public Administration and Sociology from the University of Ottawa. I specialize in helping talented introverts increase their marketability and visibility to get promoted at work - while staying true to themselves. I do this through 1:1 and group career coaching and workshop facilitation. I started my company because I was tired of seeing talented professionals in jobs that were below their skills and qualifications. At various times in my career, I was often overlooked and underestimated because I was ‘quiet’. Over time I learned to use this as a strength. In my career in the public service, I was promoted 5 times in 8 years. I coupled my personal career story and my passion for career development to create a company that helps promotion seekers discover their voice, vocalize their value, and get noticed for job promotions. I am thankful to have been able to help 350+ professionals get hired or promoted with multiple Fortune 500 companies and various levels of government.

What were the biggest initial hurdles and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest hurdles I faced in my career were naysayers. I didn’t have mentors or sponsors who were on my side. Thankfully, I am very determined, and I never took no for an answer. To me, there is always another way. Even when people tried to halt my career progress, I found another way to move ahead. We are in control of our careers and can create our own momentum. We should never let anyone tell us what we can and cannot do when it comes to our career progression. What books are you currently reading? I am a nerd for career development, so most of the books I read are related to that.
Currently, I am reading ‘Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed’ by Harvey J Coleman
What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started?
The only person standing in my way is myself.

What advice would you give to an upcoming youth or talents locally and internationally? Believe in yourself and have faith. Keep striving for excellence, and don’t let setbacks hold you back from being who God has called you to be.
