Toptal Designer | Mentor | UX & Product Design Leader

Melissa Morgan still remembers the moment.

Her parents were sitting in the front row, recording her on an actual camcorder as she took one of her first steps into the world of entrepreneurship. She was only 19 years old. Looking back, Melissa can laugh at the memory. But that young woman standing in front of a camera could not have known where that first leap would eventually lead. Today, Melissa is a three-time founder, Co-Founder and CEO of Coraltalk AI, a Toptal designer, and a mentor helping the next generation of designers and entrepreneurs discover what they are capable of. Her career has taken her from entrepreneurship and UX/UI design to product strategy, branding, emerging technology and now the future of education. Melissa began her entrepreneurial journey while studying at the University of Waterloo, where she studied Global Business and Digital Arts and also explored psychology. Her first company, uIntuition, was created around a problem she saw among post-secondary students: talented young people needed opportunities to gain experience, build portfolios and connect with employers. She became a CEO at an age when many people are still trying to figure out what they want to do. But entrepreneurship didn't give Melissa a shortcut. It gave her an education of its own.

There were lessons in building, pitching, designing, failing, adapting and starting again. Those experiences helped shape the designer and entrepreneur she would become.

Over the years, Melissa expanded her work across UX/UI, product design, visual design, art direction, branding, marketing and entrepreneurship. Her client experience has included organizations such as Harvard Business School, NBCUniversal, UEFA, Google, Forbes, Rogers, Ford, Adidas, Walmart, Telus and the University of Waterloo, among many others. Her work has also earned recognition through awards and media features.

For Melissa, design has never simply been about making something look good.

It is about understanding people.

Her background in psychology and business helped her see the intersection between human behaviour, creative problem-solving and business strategy. Today, she works as a UX and product designer while also mentoring through platforms including Designlab and GLEAC, where she helps emerging designers develop their skills and find their own paths.

That commitment to the next generation is an important part of Melissa's story.

She knows what it feels like to be young, ambitious and uncertain - to have an idea before having all the answers.

And she wants others to understand that they don't need to have everything figured out before they begin.

Melissa's latest chapter began with another question:

What if education could do a better job of showing us what students actually understand?

After years of working with learners and teaching design, she noticed something important. Students could know an idea but struggle to explain it. Written assignments could show polished answers without always revealing how deeply someone understood the material. Then generative AI changed the education landscape even further.

Instead of simply asking how students could produce better written work, Melissa began asking a bigger question: How do we make learning more human?

That question helped lead to Coraltalk AI, where Melissa now serves as Co-Founder and CEO.

Coraltalk is building a voice-first approach to learning and assessment, using personalized AI-powered conversations to help educators understand what students actually know and how they think. The goal is not to replace teachers, but to make learning more conversational, personalized and human. For Melissa, the idea is deeply connected to everything she has learned throughout her career.

  • Design taught her to listen to people.

  • Entrepreneurship taught her to solve problems.

  • Teaching taught her how people learn.

  • And now, technology is giving her another opportunity to bring those lessons together.

  • Melissa's journey is still being written.

Coraltalk is growing, and her work as a designer, entrepreneur and mentor continues to evolve. The company has already received recognition, including a first-place finish at Datamellon's AI Ignite Pitch Battle in Toronto.

But perhaps the most inspiring part of Melissa's story isn't the list of companies she has worked with or the titles she has held.

It is that she started.

She started at 19.

She learned.

She failed.

She adapted.

She tried again.

And she kept building.

For the next generation, her story offers a simple reminder: you don't have to know exactly where your journey will take you to take the first step. An idea can become a company. A skill can become a career. A failure can become a lesson. And something that begins as a small curiosity can eventually become a mission much bigger than yourself.

Melissa is still that young founder in many ways - curious, creative and willing to ask, “What if we did this differently?”

Only now, her question isn't just about building the next product. It's about helping build a future where every learner has an opportunity to be heard, understood and truly learn. And perhaps that is the most meaningful lesson of all: You don't need to have the whole path figured out. Sometimes, you just need the courage to begin.
