When the streets of Lagos buzzed with the pulse of Afrobeat and the heartbeat of a new generation rising, one young boy was already listening—not just to the music, but to its meaning. That boy was Philip Tekeyi, known today on stages around the world as DJ Phil Baddest—a name that doesn’t just echo through nightclubs and festivals, but through hearts, cultures, and continents. Born in the vibrant city of Lagos and proudly rooted in the traditions of Delta State, Phil’s journey started not in a fancy studio, but in curiosity. From an early age, music called to him. While others heard beats, Phil studied them—breaking down rhythms, feeling the vibe of crowds, understanding how music could shape moods, lift spirits, and tell stories. It wasn’t long before the young Lagosian began experimenting with turntables, headphones snug over his ears, heart pounding with each drop of the bass. His talent didn’t go unnoticed. Under the wings of legendary mentors like VDJ Bobbi, DJ Jimmy Poska, and DJ Shankeemoore, he wasn’t just taught—he was ignited. Before he ever lit up international stages, Phil was grinding in the streets of Nigeria. He worked side hustles, including a stint at Dana Plastic in Lagos. Saving every naira, not for flashy chains but for something more valuable—his dream. His love for technology led him to open Phil’s Computer Repairs and Sales Company, marrying his tech-savviness with entrepreneurial grit. Education was equally vital to him. He attended Command Secondary School in Ojo Cantonment, then went on to study Computer Engineering at Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), later completing his degree at Lagos State University (LASU). It wasn’t just about textbooks—it was about vision, focus, and the discipline to carve out a path in a world full of noise. And then, in 2017, that path led him to Canada. But Phil didn’t just migrate—he imported a movement. Landing in Toronto with his headphones and hustle, he infused the Canadian music scene with the raw, electric energy of West Africa. Clubs, festivals, and community events from Niagara Falls to Brampton, Kitchener to Waterloo, couldn’t get enough. Every set he played wasn’t just a performance—it was an experience, a celebration of heritage, rhythm, and the undeniable presence of Afrobeat on the global map.

But DJ Phil Baddest isn’t just a DJ. He’s an architect of sound. A creative force who can read the room like a novel—sensing when to pause, when to build, and when to unleash a sonic storm that leaves people breathless. His performances are journeys, not just sets. Every beat is intentional. Every mix, a message. And soon, the world began to take notice.

He’s lit up stages in Nigeria, Ghana, and all across Canada. His 2024 single “Wole Wa” featuring Nigerian Afro-pop star Lyta has become more than a hit—it’s an anthem. With previous releases like “Bam Bam” (ft. Yungsam) and “Remind Myself” (ft. Ellse), Phil has proven he’s not just spinning other people’s records—he’s creating his own legacy. Collaborations with Toronto stars like Dr. Bushman, CasperTNG, Geezy Loc, Road Runner, Ox Snap, LocoCity, and Yung Tory show his ability to blend cultures, bridge sounds, and bring artists together in powerful ways. And now, with a debut EP on the horizon featuring the likes of Lyta, Yungsam, Dunde, Ellse, and Blessoo, the world is bracing for a wave of sound that could only come from DJ Phil Baddest.

The accolades followed, but for Phil, every award tells a deeper story. In 2024, he received a Certificate of Achievement at the Esteem Award Canada and an Excellent Leadership Award from the Lions Club International (Toronto Nigeria Lions Club). Cities like Brampton and counties across Ontario have officially recognized his cultural impact. From electrifying the Afro Carribrant Festival to bringing down the house in Paris, Ontario, Phil continues to leave his mark—one beat drop at a time. But perhaps the most powerful title he holds is “Inspiration.” Back in 2022, the Africa Canada Investment Summit named him the Most Inspiring Personality. And rightly so. Because DJ Phil Baddest isn’t just about fame—he’s about foundation. He’s built his life brick by brick, with integrity, resilience, and an unshakable belief in the power of music.

Through all the lights and loudspeakers, his mission remains clear: to elevate African music globally, to uplift Nigerian DJs, and to prove that DJs are not just background sound—they’re cultural ambassadors. As he once said, “DJs are now topping charts, making albums, and headlining concerts. We are the link between music and the people.

So to every young dreamer with earbuds in and stars in their eyes, Phil’s story is your signal: your passion can take you places. Whether you’re in a classroom, behind a soundboard, or working a day job to fund your dream, keep going. Because DJ Phil Baddest isn’t just spinning records—he’s spinning possibility. And if his journey is any clue—the best is still yet to come.
